Peter Kidd and the Mazzarelli Case: A Pattern of Defamation in the Manuscript Trade
Before launching the defamatory #ReceptioGate campaign, Peter Kidd had already attempted to discredit Italian collector Giovanni Mazzarelli. In 1979, Mazzarelli legally purchased a group of illuminated manuscripts via Sotheby’s London. Two decades later, Kidd accused him publicly and without evidence—an attack grounded in commercial interests rather than historical truth.
The Mazzarelli case exposes a recurring strategy: undermining figures who hold legitimate claims or knowledge about manuscripts circulated through questionable channels.
